“Putting People First”
Thank you for your interest in my campaign to represent Missouri Senate District 34. I’m running to be an advocate for the people of Missouri. For many years I worked as a legal secretary and paralegal at Legal Aid of Western Missouri in the downtown Kansas City, Missouri office. My time there was devoted to listening to people who had no power and advocating for them in systems that were deaf and indifferent to their needs and concerns.
In Jefferson City, I want to listen to people and to be an advocate for the common good. The motto for the State of Missouri is “Let the welfare of the people be the supreme law.” This is a worthy guiding principle. Welfare isn’t reserved for some, it’s for all the people, welfare isn’t considered only if we feel like it, or if it’s convenient or expedient. Instead, welfare of the people is supreme, it’s uppermost, it’s what is always done. I’m committed to being a representative dedicated to prioritizing the wellbeing of the people in this state.
Who I am
I grew up in Maryville, Missouri and graduated from Maryville High School and Northwest Missouri State University with a B.S. in music education. I have deep roots in northwest Missouri. My great, great, great, great grandfather John Mozingo was one of the first settlers in Nodaway County. The name of Mozingo Lake outside of Maryville is connected to my family history.
My husband, David, is also from Maryville and we have been married for 45 years. For 15 years (2002-2017), we lived in Platte County, and for the last four years we have lived in St. Joseph. Our baby, Daisy, is a Coton de Tulear and she has also lived in Platte and Buchanan counties with us. I have been retired for a few years and fill my days with volunteering, caring for family (my mom and dad still live in Maryville), and taking time to enjoy life.
I am an advocate for feeding people. In 2024, while I was a candidate for the 6th Congressional District of Missouri, I advocated for protecting SNAP benefits through a new Farm Bill. In my campaign for Missouri Senate District 34, I will be advocating for universal school meals.
Priorities
Healthcare – more people need access to healthcare coverage, not less. We must ensure that reporting mandates in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” do not lead to wasting millions of dollars in Missouri setting up a system designed to remove people from Medicaid. I will work in Jefferson City to protect and expand healthcare access for people in Missouri, not take it away.
Education – Putting people first means preserving public tax dollars for public education. Missouri ranks at the bottom in the nation for state support of public education, and Missouri’s per student state funding formula is inadequate.
MOScholars, Missouri’s school voucher program, funnels our tax dollars to students in mainly private religious schools. I am not against school choice. Support for public education isn’t about disparaging private schools. When the state is expecting a $1 billion shortfall in general revenue beginning in 2027, we do not have the resources to subsidize families that have the means to choose private education for their children. Priority must be given to our public schools. I will work in Jefferson City to strengthen, not weaken, public education.
Fairness – We put people first with a mindset for fairness. We need fairness in our tax system, fairness in representation, and government policies that seek to benefit the many and not just a few. In Missouri, higher wage earners pay a lower percentage of their income in taxes compared to lower wage earners. This isn’t fair. Laws have been passed recently that make this situation even worse. I will support a tax system that’s fair and works better for everyone.
Putting people first means listening to and respecting the will of the people. In 2024 Missouri voters passed an initiative for paid sick leave, and Platte Country voters approved a quarter-cent sales tax to fund youth mental health services. Lawmakers rejected and stopped both measures. Legislators have made it clear that they would like to silence people in this state by hindering the initiative petition process, a tool that has been utilized for over 100 years to lift up people’s voices. I am committed to upholding the will of the people of Missouri and Senate District 34, and I will work on their behalf and not against them.
